How did I miss this place? Answer: Like so much great local NY Chinese food, it had been hiding out in Flushing, Queens, where despite my best intentions, I never seem to find time to hop on the 7 train and go explore. Joe’s figured this out (as did Xi’an and so many others) and snapped up its 1/20th acre of prized real estate at the super clean and modern Canal Street Market, right next to the Q/R/W/6/ trains. Tempted yet? I’ll cut to the chase. This is destination food at its Asian finest! You watch as the young chefs crank out individually prepared plate after plate of the steamed rice roll – which really is like a paper thin, crepe-y noodle. They fill it with pork or beef or shrimp, or egg & veggies, and chop it into nine dainty little rolled squares, to which they add a bit of soy sauce and scallions, cilantro or sesame seeds, if you ask. At the counter where they serve you, you grab some chopsticks and hit the Sriracha or chili paste and off you go. Find a stool, snap your Instagram shot and dig in. It’s just filling enough for lunch (they close at 7 p.m.) and might well be the best $6 you’ll ever spend in New York City.
