Wild Pepper & Beef Mifen Noodles
112 First Avenue
New York, NY 10009
The Ramen craze has passed me by. Mind you, I live for noodles and LOVE Ramen, but the shops are popping up like wild mushrooms on the streets of NY and beyond, and I assume it is just a matter of time before someone Chiptotle-izes the whole concept (hmmm, come to think of it…). So let me say, I did not hit up Hunan Slurp out of some sense of trendy allegiance (nor is it Japanese, for that matter). It just looked good. And I was not disappointed. The above dish was eye-poppingly hot (no rookie question from the waitstaff about what heat you prefer) and the meat tender and generously added. Being our first time, we doubled down with the Three Delicacies version of the same. This time it was swimming with a variety of wild mushrooms along with the delicate Mifen noodles, and the broth was rich and mild like a fabulous Chinese chicken soup. We savored the smashed cucumber vinaigrette salad which was a great greens split for two. I m still thinking about this meal. The decor is gorgeous, the vibe hip, but not too much so – just the right amount of East Village cool. We are going back to eat the entire menu!
