I often think back fondly to the days when a good New York slice was available on every corner in the city; a crispy wedge eaten folded in half with the crust just thick enough to support the gooey confluence of mozzarella and tangy sauce as it slid toward the middle of the vee. Having just moved back to New York after many years, I'm dismayed that a good "slice" seems hard to find – at least near my office in midtown. So, what chance did I have of finding a perfect pizza in suburban New Rochelle, where we now live? Very good, it turns out. On a recent Friday at Modern, the well-loved institution on Huguenot Street, we waited for a seat at the gorgeously lit, mile-long bar. We ordered a "Traditional Pizza" with sausage and mushrooms, which came out swiftly and was placed on a pedestal fitting for such a specimen. The crust bore in places the characteristic char of the brick oven – crisp as a cracker underneath with a delicately chewy "handle." The cheese stretched the length of my arm as I hoisted a piece onto my plate, but did not overwhelm the crumbled sausage and fresh mushrooms dotting the pie, nor the bright, fresh tomato sauce. This pizza was so savory and light that two of us easily made our way through the regular-sized pie, stopping only to conserve a slice or two for lunch the next day. Speaking of which, the leftovers were almost as good, both cold and hot. Ahhh, it's good to be back.
