Put aside, if you will, the 20/20 hindsight that evokes such heartache when you think of how it ends for Dinah Manoff in ORDINARY PEOPLE after her famous "date scene" with Timothy Hutton, filmed at the original Walker Brothers Pancake House in the leafy Chicago suburb of Wilmette. For those of a certain age, Robert Redford's directorial classic began many a love affair: with Pachelbel, Donald Sutherland as the doting dad; Judd Hirsch – the best shrink ever! – and Elizabeth McGovern as the bumbling, shy teenaged crush. Oh, that hair! It's hard not to think of all of them every time I tuck into a Walker Bros. apple pancake. The crunch of the egg-infused outer shell (Mary Tyler Moore, we loved hating you in this role). The sweet, gooey, cinnamon-inflected center leavened by the chunks of perfectly baked apple. This is a meal, a journey, an experience. The innocence of the 80s are gone. But the decor, the memories, and the dish live on.
