My mother used to serve us grapefruit at breakfast. To me this was an act of parental torture, only slightly improved by two details: that she would use a special serrated grapefruit knife to section each segment (or carpel in foodie speak), and that we were permitted to sprinkle sugar on top. And still, even as an adult, I never warmed up to grapefruit. Until last weekend, when a lot of heat - as in blowtorch heat - turned a grapefruit into one of the most magnificent brunch accompaniments I have ever had. The dish's simplicity belied its perfection, a gorgeous, bright orange with a beautiful mahogany lid of caramelized sugar. Breaking through the lid I encountered an exquisite marriage of sourness, sweetness, and crackle. There was only one thing to do after brunch. Head to Home Depot and get a blowtorch.
