Pack Your Own Bowl Poke
Aloha Poke Company
Aloha Poke Company, a Chicago establishment which just opened its third restaurant in Lakeview off of the Belmont red/brown/purple line stop, is good. Poke is traditionally a Hawaiian food, a combination of rice, fresh raw fish, and different combinations of vegetables and add-ins that together make a meal that is at once hearty, refreshing, and exciting. Aloha's Poke is delicious, assembled Chipotle-style from a wide-ranging selection of toppings and dressings and packed tight into a bowl that fits a lot more food than it looks. Is Chicago Poke a worthwhile stateside compatriot of the Hawaiian original? Three of my friends who are from Hawaii are going to join me the next time I travel to Aloha for a meal. They've promised to be tough judges. But whether Aloha ends up being an honest pleasure or a guilty one, it's a pleasure all the same. If you're looking for a fresh feast that hearkens to a world of food far from Chicago Dogs and Deep Dish, then this is a must-stop on the El.
