If you can't walk by a New York street food cart without being a little intoxicated by the sweet smell of woodsmoke and meats, this might be the place for you. The chicken tikka is pictured above, but just replace chicken with lamb and you are getting two reviews for the price of one. For a certain generation of NYers (the ones whose first apartment was in Hell's Kitchen because it was actually a little hellish and the only place you could afford the rent), Afghan Kebab House was your "living dangerously" go-to place for ethnic food. It still delivers the same experience today, though the 'hood has gentrified mightily. The just-right helping of grilled chicken breast cubes sits atop a bed of the fluffiest rice you can imagine, the spices mingling with the meat. A dollop of green or red sauce from the table can only enhance the experience and makes for excellent sopping with the delicious flatbread. The restaurant is narrow like a train aisle and busy and cheerful, yet never too insanely noisy. It's BYOB, which makes it the perfect place for a long meal with an old friend, or to impress a first date with your NY worldliness while not breaking the bank.
