The words that come to mind in describing their steak frites are decidedly not food lingo: "comme il faut," or "as it should be." Given the restaurant's pedigree - its older sister is the well known Cakes & Ale - one might have expected a riff of some sort on this classic dish. However, in the end, this is a perfect example of less is more. It starts with good meat (theirs is from Oregon – Painted Hills to be specific), cooked just right and plated with frites that are also "tout à fait comme il faut." In case there is not universal acceptance of what great frites means, I would offer: Crispy on the outside, meaty rich on the inside, lightly salted and still hot! Get a bit of help with the wine selection - our extremely competent server nailed it - and the only thing missing is actually being in the 7eme.
