Betty Davis Eyes
317 Third Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11215
I'm looking forward to going back to Dirty Precious on a dark, wintry night for a One Night Stand. Before you get all moral on me, I'm talking about a drink on the menu at this sexy, fun, mysterious and tasty Gowanus bar. Here's how the menu describes that drink: Look into your bartender's eyes. Tell them your deepest desires. Fall in love with a thing in a glass. Think about it the next day. Or don't. Life is short. Take big gulps.
We went to DP on a rare spontaneous date, so we immediately got down to business. We ordered the Betty Davis Eyes, a most-refreshing and zingy blend of Pisco, Mandarine Napoleon, Lemon and Egg White, and a classic martini made with the owner's favorite fragrant, distinctive and woodsy gin from Portland, Oregon. (Turns out Portland gin is now hipper than Brooklyn gin. I didn't think anything could be hipper than Brooklyn gin.) Although we never order "boards" of anything because we don't like paying $20 for cheese, crackers and a few slices of pig, we really enjoyed the DP Antipasto Board and thought it was very good value for $16. It was neither dirty nor precious, but included generous portions of sharp cheese, sweet chutney, savory salami, potato-ey tortilla and crunchy baguette. Just enough to ensure we didn't get too drunk and start married-arguing on our married-date. I can't wait to go back, sidle up to the bar and discuss my deepest desires.
